WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

Unlike some of our competitors we are not going to try and blackmail you into donating by saying that we won't continue if you don't. That would just be vulgar, but our lives, and those of the animals which we look after, would be a damn sight easier if we receive more donations to our fighting fund. Donate via Paypal today...

RICHARD FREEMAN FOUND THIS (why are we not surprised?)

They say that you should never judge a book by its cover but Reader, ‘they’ are wrong. ‘They’ also recommend you to floss and we all know how fucking horrible that is.
We judge book covers just like we judge everythingand everyone you care about. Mostly that involves asking yourself ‘Is this person/place/thing going to benefit me in any way?’ and then ‘Do I enjoy looking at this person/place/thing?’.
ANYWAY. Books. Books are brilliant, there is no doubt about this, but when it comes to book covers, publishers can get it hilariously wrong. Here are Ramp.ie’s thirty-four Top Ten Horrible Book Covers.

MUIRHEAD`S MYSTERIES: LARGE PALE BLUE EGGS IN N.E. CHINA

Folks, what were giant egg or eggs (see attached photos) doing in Heilongjiang Province, once Manchuria, on July 2nd this year? Only the bird or dragon or whatever knows .

The story appeared on a Chinese cryptozoology site at tieba.baidu.com/p/2438147825 where the photos of an egg of a pale blue colour appeared, measuring 15 c.m long and weighing 2.1 kg (or 2lb according to elsewhere in the text)

The story is that in the back yard of a “cottage hospital” (Google Translate is not satisfactory here) one or more of these foul smelling eggs were found then thrown into the trash. One photo shows a middle aged man holding one of the eggs in his hand with a woman looking on. Needless to say, their neighbours were fascinated. Another shows an egg standing upright next to a hen`s egg, then being held in one hand and another person holding the hen`s egg right next to the huge one. There were no reports of escaped ostriches .

One person speculated about pythons, the other dragons.(1) Altogether a significant mystery because the last ostriches in China died out just after the last ice age according to Wikipedia and I have no other Chinese ostrich reports in my files except a POSSIBLE one in S.China circa 1893(2) The strange thing is about 10 days before I found this story I found a story from New Zealand in 1945 about strange eggs turning up in a town near Wellington. Thanks to Corinna for allowing me to cover this rather than on her own birds blog.

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN ESCAPES

It is another beautiful day here in North Devon, although - pleasantly - it is cooler and more refreshing than it was a few weeks ago. This is the best year for butterflies that we have had in many years, with - quite often - half a dozen or more individuals visible at any one time. A friend who reads these blogs is very unwell. I want her to know that she is in my thoughts and prayers constantly at the moment, and that if there is anything we can do, then she, or her husband (who is a dear friend of mine and has been for many years) need only ask..

*  The Gonzo Daily is a two way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at  jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow...

*  The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link:

* We should probably mention here, that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors in other people's websites. Honest guv!

*  Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 53 who - together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange) puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the orange cat?
